About Us

Akdeniz University Faculty of Letters, Department of Sociology was established with the decision of the Higher Education Council dated March 3, 1998, and numbered 3996. Our department, which accepted its first students in the 2001-2002 academic year, aims to educate individuals at the modern university level who have sociological knowledge about social structure and social problems. In the Department of General Sociology and Methodology, there is 1 Professor, 2 Associate Professors, and 1 Doctoral Lecturer, in the Department of Institutional Sociology there are 1 Professor and 1 Associate Professor, in the Department of Applied Sociology there are 2 Professors, 1 Associate Professor, and in the Department of Social Structure and Change 1 Doctor Lecturer. In addition, 3 Research Assistants work in our department. The number of active students studying in our department is 308 as of 2022. Our department started to admit students to the Master’s program in 2005 and to the Ph.D. program in 2009. As of 2022, there are 43 students enrolled in the Master’s Program and 15 students enrolled in the Doctoral Program. Student mobility is ensured in our department through international exchange programs such as the Erasmus Program and the Mevlana Program and agreements made within the scope of national exchange programs such as the Farabi program.

With our curricula prepared to global standards and our experienced teaching staff, it is aimed to provide our students with basic knowledge about sociology and to enable our students to apply this knowledge in real life, develop their analytical skills, and ensure that they are graduates equipped with rich skills. In line with this purpose, our students are expected to be productive, responsible individuals who have local and universal values, can think independently, produce, use and share information, have a voice in the international arena, and carry out projects and research that can meet social needs. The graduates of our department, who continue their education and training activities at the undergraduate, graduate, and doctorate levels, have the opportunity to work and find employment in a wide variety of fields, in the public and private sectors, with theoretical and practical knowledge.

Mission

Benefiting from the basic epistemological and methodological approaches of sociology; able to analyze social problems, the functioning of social structures and relations, local and global socio-economic, ecological and technological change and transformation processes, in a multidisciplinary relational, multifaceted, holistic and critical approach; to raise individuals who care about ethical values and act with a sense of scientific, social and ecological responsibility.

To be a department that can produce creative and original ideas for the solution of current socioeconomic, cultural and ecological problems, develop research projects and policy proposals, and offer quality education.
